The Whole School kids are excitedly anticipating and preparing for the Nakusp Fun Run/Walk happening THIS Saturday, May 28th! Their coach and teacher, Eli Geddis, has been involved in Kootenay Sufferfest for over five years and is an experienced long distance runner and adventure runner. He believes that kids doing activity and movement during and outside of school promotes strong self-esteem, academic performance and an active lifestyle in adulthood. Well, they are getting plenty of activity in and out of school this year! Thank you Eli.
The students are running about 2 kms every Tuesday and Thursday in addition to spontaneous runs throughout the week! It has been a unique way to see the world outside of school through the trails and byways of Winlaw.
The Whole School prioritizes outdoor leadership and adventure through their regular Friday Outdoor Leadership Program led by Eli and supported through parent participation. This program involves swimming, gymnastics, skiing, snowshoeing, biking, hiking, and wilderness safety education. The Whole School OLP program offers a natural segway for students into local secondary school outdoor ed programs such as the OELP program offered through W.E. Graham Community School in Slocan City, BC.
This year begins with a swoosh – that’s the sound of The Whole School students cross country skiing on snow! The Winter Term has been full of outdoor adventuring including Wild Voices for Kids Winter Survival Program with Shanoon Bennett, snowshoe making with our teacher Eli Geddis, x-country touring to Paulson Winter Hut, and a fun day of building snow mazes and snow caves with our Principal Anniah Lang.
The Spring term will focus on biking and hiking. Stay tuned to find out what the students at the Whole School get up to…
The Whole School had an eventful year last year with new focus on the Outdoor Leadership Program that will continue through this year. The students were climbing, hiking, biking, skiing, swimming, doing gymnastics & generally adventuring in our beautiful Kootenay wilderness. They also learned basket weaving, hatched chicks & watched butterflies emerge from their cocoons in the spring. Singing with Bo Conlan was another highlight.
With winter coming and Hallowe’en behind us, it’s a great time to reflect on the past year and look forward to what’s ahead.
